What We Believe

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Our Faith

Redeemer Presbyterian Church is committed to the great truths of the Bible, centred on the good news of Jesus Christ.

We are a confessional church with membership in the Presbyterian Church of Australia. We hold to the Westminster Confession of Faith (AD1647), read in light of a Declaratory Statement (AD1901). This Confession is a classic statement of biblical Christianity held by churches down through the centuries.

It highlights:

  1. the glory of the one true and living God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
  2. God’s Word being the highest authority for life and practice;
  3. God’s sovereignty in creation, providence and salvation;
  4. the horror and depth of human sin;
  5. God’s initiative to save his people by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone;
  6. the unity of the Old and New Testaments in declaring the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ;
  7. the centrality of the person and work of Christ in God’s plan to save his people;
  8. the sovereign work of God’s Spirit in enabling and sustaining Christian faith and life;
  9. the significance of God’s Church, made up of believers and their children, and the centrality of the Church’s ministry of Word and sacrament in God’s global mission;
  10. the promise of Christ’s return to judge the world and save his people.

These core biblical truths shape what is preached, taught and practiced at Redeemer Presbyterian Church.

Why Presbyterian?

Committed to God’s Word

The Presbyterian Church is committed to faithfully teaching and preaching the Bible.

Team Leadership

We recognise Jesus Christ as “the only King and Head of the Church.” He hasn’t left us to figure out church leadership on our own, the Bible teaches that each local church should be led by a team of elders, and one or more of these may serve full-time as a “Minister.” The word “Presbyterian”, in fact, comes from the Greek word, presbuteros, meaning “elder.”)

We believe this team leadership is not only faithful to God’s word but also practical as each elder brings his own gifts and life experience, and no one person carries the whole weight of responsibility alone.

Coordinated Ministry and Mission with Other Churches

Local churches also don’t stand alone, they belong to one another, and that belonging shows up in shared government. We believe the Bible calls the elders of local churches to meet together and oversee the life and mission of the wider church.
In the Presbyterian Church of Australia, that shared government works through Presbyteries and Assemblies. A Presbytery is a regional body where the Minister and one elder from each local church in the region oversees the health and coordinates the mission of those churches. Assemblies are State and National bodies of representative Ministers and elders, oversee the joint ministry of all the churches together.

This structure lets us proclaim the good news of Jesus and bless the world together, in more ways than we could alone. At Redeemer Presbyterian Church, we’re glad to partner with ministries like Presbyterian Youth, Jericho Road, Christ College, and the Australian Presbyterian World Mission.
